Thirteen Unlucky for Woolfs
CHARLESTON, WV--Woolf fans hoped to see an impressive winning streak continue when they turned their attention away from the three car pile up in turn three of the Woolf Den's NASCAR regulation track. They got their wish, seeing Marv Levy's undefeated streak as a head coach continue, but not exactly what they'd hoped.

yards rushing by Deuce McAllister and Edgerrin James, the Sin City Grifters sent the Woolfs to bed with a regular season loss for the first time since September 23, 2002 when the Bakersfield Circus Bears edged them out 118-104.

Bledsoe, who lost all of last season to injury, inspired memories of his 1997 campaign when he began the season with back to back 60-plus point games and finished third in the MVP voting. "I was healthy toward the end of last season," Bledsoe confessed, "but [Donovan] McNabb was playing well ahead of me and the coaches decided to hold me out. I think the rest may have turned out to be the best thing for me."

West Virginia's vaunted rushing attack never got rolling as Ahman Green was benched just before kickoff and replaced by Travis Henry. Henry's struggle to reach thirty yards put pressure on Priest Holmes, who responded with just 84 yards and never reached the end zone. Green's status for Sunday's match up with Toledo is uncertain.
Unitas Spins in Grave
BAKERSFIELD, VT--Peyton Manning responded to mentor Johnny Unitas's death by throwing a career high three interceptions. "I blame these stupid hightops," Manning grumbled, indicating the black shoes he wore to honor Unitas. "I wish the league had stepped in and told me I wasn't allowed to wear them or something."

Despite Manning's struggles, Bakersfield put away Toledo, the preseason's number one ranked team. "I never did like that poll," griped Brett Favre, holding his wedding band against his mouth as if contemplating making it into a tooth. "All it does is put a target on somebody."

"You really can't place blame in a game like this," Neanderthal head coach Sam Rutigliano said. "You win as a team, you lose as a team." He then added, "But if you bet your house on Plaxico Burress being benched next week, you'll have two houses."

Bakersfield, off to a second straight 2-0 start, has won both it's games despite a poor showing by Faulk in week one and Manning in week two. "The rest of the league," receiver Marcus Robinson warned while pushing Terry Glenn aside to get to reporters, "better be scared. Once we all get clicking, we'll be unstoppable." Robinson, despite not playing, only scored one point less than he did last week.

Catching the Bouquet
MOOSE RIVER--Coming into Sunday's game, the Mounties invoked a little history, calling the Mennonites perennial "bridesmaids" in reference to their three straight Bucco Bruce Bowl appearances without a title. If John Cleese and his staff had dug a little deeper into the history books, they would have noticed another interesting statistic.

Following Sunday's win, the Mennonites are 5-1 all time against defending BFL champions.

The factoid, once flashed on the score ticker across the bottom of the Pueblo/Mayberry late game, prompted Mennonite owner Greg Hulke to lobby to have all Iron City Blitzer records removed from the West Virginia franchise history. "Come on, Hulda [Dent? What was her name anyway?] won that banner. Why's it hanging in West Virginia?"

The Mennonites split their season series with the Texas Sexists in 1998, making them 4-0 against BFL champs whose owners remain with the team for the following season. That said, Tom Brady and the Patsies--neither of whom know anything about championships--led West Coast to a commanding win, but the most interesting competition might have come from the match up of rookie defensive coordinators. John Kreese's Kobra Kai formations swept Rod Smith's legs out from under him, while Sifl and Olly's Cresent Fresh package picked off two Kurt Warner interceptions.

BOSTON--A week removed from a blow out at the hand of the West Virginia Woolfs, Boston wound up with a more heart wrenching 4-point loss courtesy of the Killah Bees. "When you get to open the season with two straight home games," sighed new Lagers coach Bill Cowher, "you expect to be 2-0." The Lagers now go on the road to Pueblo and Hollywood before returning.

East Coast had hoped for a larger margin of victory, but coach Leroy Hoard admitted he was distracted by his alma mater's loss to Notre Dame on Saturday. "What a fluke," Hoard grumbled. "Michigan should have pasted the Irish. Anyway, I have to get back to coachin--what? The game's over?"

Despite Hoard studying game film from the Wolverines/Irish game instead of the Lagers, the Buccaneer defense carried the team with two touchdowns and a safety, putting the game out of reach.

Prairiedogs Hold On to Win
PUEBLO--When he managed to keep his grip on the ball, Daunte Culpepper had no trouble leading his team past Mayberry. Unfortunately, he didn't manage to keep his grip on the ball very often. Three fumbles put the game in doubt up until the final whistle.

The Chargers defense nearly set a BFL record, finishing in a tie for the fourth best day ever by a defense, but couldn't overcome Brad Johnson's inability to throw a touchdown pass nor Michael Bennett's aenemic 45 yards rushing. "Do you know how tired we are of everyone thinking 'Oh, it's just the Fifes' and not having to bring their best?" asked linebacker Junior Seau. "When teams make mistakes like fumbling three times, you need to capitalize."
