Six Appeal
LAS VEGAS--Chad Johnson may not have been in uniform, but as the final seconds of Monday night's game ticked down, he was on the field to celebrate his team's record start. Johnson, suspended for endorsing an alcoholic beverage against ownership's wishes, thrust six fingers in the air and ran to

embrace his teammates.

Last week, Fun City and Moose River tied the 1997 and '98 Athenian Woodchucks' record for best start to a season, both going 5-0. However, a day after the Mounties fell to Mayberry, the Grift-Os etched their name in history alone.

"This is the ultimate team's team," coach Marv Levy shouted loud enough for the players to hear. "Steve [McNair] carried us a long way today and the Ravens kept a wealth of talent in check, but everyone on this team has contributed to where we are."

The Lagers' lost dropped them into three way tie for the third playoff spot in the division. "This is the half way point of the season," sighed coach Bill Cowher. "I think we need to look at the second half and treat it like a whole new season that will hopefully wind up better than the first."

Former Sin City Grifter Peerless Price, whom general manager Jake Bell described as "a complete moron, coward, and... moron," caught one pass for eight yards in his return to Vegas, nearly nabbing disappointment of the week honors. "Well, what do you expect?" Price grumbled. "I was getting pelted with Kyle Boller's potty training book all night. Now I remember why I hate these fans."
More WV QB Problems
ASBURY PARK--Adding the league's best receiver was supposed to help West Virginia's passing game, but it may take a while for Marvin Harrison to develop chemistry with the Woolf's quarterbacks.

Time, however, is not something the team has much of.

Donovan McNabb and Ton Brady are averaging just under seven points per game, which has dropped the Woolfs into fourth place with just two wins through the first five games.

"Everyone says you have to have a running game to win championships," sighed Ahman Green who finished as the top running back of the week. "But championship teams are balanced teams and we are way off balance so far."

The win threw East Coast back into contention, tying them for second in the division with West Coast. "This was a must-have game," admitted coach Bill Parcells. "you don't like to say that when you're less than halfway through the season, but it's true. If we'd lost, I don't think we could have come back from 2-4 and made the playoffs."

West Coast Slide Continues
BEVERLY HILLS--While the Mennonites were looking ahead to a divisional show down with West Virginia, they should have been paying attention to the task in front of them.

"I think we looked past them," receiver Amani Toomer reluctantly admitted. "You have a low-scoring, 1-4 team coming into your housethis week and a team most people tab as the most talented in the league at their place next week... it's hard to concentrate on what seems like a gime win."

West Coast turned in a sloppy performance for the second straight week, coughing up three fumbles while failing to force even one turnover from Chambersburg.

"It wasn't a pretty game, but that 'W' looks good in the record," laughed quarterback Rich Gannon. "The key was not making any mistakes and taking advantage of the mistakes they did make."

Coach John Elway pumped up his team after the game, but warned against getting too cocky. "We didn't score much out there, but we scored enough to win. This is the foundation to getting back where we were last year, not the completion."

Mounties' Streak Put on Holt
MOOSE RIVER--The Mounties had dreams of being the first team ever to start a BFL season 6-0, but Torry Holt had other ideas. The reciever shredded the Chiefs secondary for eleven catches for 161 yards and two touchdowns.

Holt, who called in sick to last weekend's game ony to be caught fishing later in the day, took it upon himself to prove Moose River wouldn't intimidate his team. "Earlier this week, some guys were quiet and acting like we'd already lost," Holt recalled. "I told them these guys were lucky and there was no reason we shouldn't be able to play at their level."

The Mounties, however, took the loss in stride. "Hell, you want to win them all," coach Jim Mora shrugged. "Does it happen? Never has. Better to get your losses out of the way now than in December."

Quarterback Brad Johnson, who nearly singlehandedly carried the offense agreed. "I don't want you to think we're okay with losing, but a streak is just a streak. The important thing is we're still two games ahead of anybody else and the favorites to win the division."

Mayberry will have another chance to be streak breakers next week when they take on 6-0 Fun City.

Manning Not Alone
TOLEDO--Coach Sam Rutigliano thought the plan seemed a little too simple. Stop Peyton Manning and you stop the Circus Bears.

The Neanderthal slowed Manning, but couldn't bring him to a complete halt. Unfortunately, the Circus Bear scouts made another bid to win the MVP this season with another parking lot signing.

A week after signing Rudi Johnson to play running back an hour before kick off, the Circus Bears fielded the Jets defense after spotting them playing touch football outside the Glass Bowl. After trading uniforms with the 49ers, the Jets forced four turnovers and sacked Brett Favre seven times.

The win rocketed the Circus Bears past Boston for second place in the division and prompted owner Robert Baker to make a bold prediction. "The Grift-Os are coming here in week 11," Baker calculated. "That's the game that will decide the division because we'll both be 7-3 at that point."
