Injuries, Aikman Too Much for Grifters to Overcome
LAS VEGAS, NEVADA--Following their loss, no one in the Grifters' locker room wanted to talk about the game. "How's Chad?" asked quarterback Mark Brunell. Even as Herman Moore made his way into the press room on crutches, his first concern was not the extent of his own injuries.

Chad Brown was taken off the field in an ambulance during the third quarter and took his team's spirit with him. His injury, coupled with Herman Moore's strained knee in the first half,

left the reigning Bucco Bruce Bowl champs shorthanded and distracted.

"I don't want to make excuses," running back Terrell Davis sighed. "The Fifes kicked our asses, plain and simple. Still, when you watch a guy who's like your brother get taken off in a neck brace and rushed to the hospital, football is the last thing on your mind."

Fortunately, x-rays on Brown revealed no serious damage and he could return against Beijing next week. The diagnosis wasn't as positive for Moore whose knee is expected to keep him out four to six weeks.

Fife quarterback Troy Aikman's five touchdown passes and 360 yards passing led the Mayberry offense roughshod over the outmatched Grifter defense. Ed McCaffrey scored three of those touchdowns, consistantly beating Sin City cornerback Willie Williams.

Young Done in By Youth
HONOLULU, HAWAII--Young looked very old today.

Outplayed by former teammate Jake Plummer, Steve Young could do nothing to spark the Circus Bears offense in the face of the Honolulu defensive unit. "Nothing I did went right today," Young shrugged as he dressed after the game. "Youth was served today. Maybe I should have let Akili Smith or Charlie Batch take the start."

As for youth being served, rookie running back Edgerrin James proved he was ready to take on the challenge of being a fulltime BFL back, rushing for over 110 yards and a touchdown. Despite a lost fumble, James outshone backfield partner Fred Taylor, the second year back picked by many to go All-BFL this season. Taylor didn't seem worried though, telling the press, "When you first come in here as a rookie, you aren't sure how you'll match up with the big boys. I let Edgerrin take a few more carries to boost his confidence. I know I'll get those yards in the long run."

The Headbangers' one win already ties them for last season's total (as the Tangerine Tarpons). They now prepare for the Athenian Woodchucks next week. Should they win there, they will tie the Tarpons' all-time franchise record for wins in a season set in 1997 with two.

Testaverde's Season Over
BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS--Last year's MVP-caliber season and critic-defying playoff run made a legend of Vinnie Testaverde in Toledo. With their quarterback returning under contract for the 1999 season, Neanderthal fans began to believe the Bucco Bruce Bowl was not just possible, but their destiny. More than any other player, Vinnie represented that dream.

During the second quarter of the Lager/Neanderthal game, that dream collapsed on the field of Samuel Adams Stadium.

Leaning over for a fumble, something snapped in Testaverde's leg, causing him to crumple to the turf. He wasn't hit or even touched by another player, but his Achille's tendon ruptured nonetheless.

Post game examinations of Testaverde's heel showed the tendon had actually ruptured last season, but had been replaced by a couple of rubberbands and staples. Toledo team physician Turok was sought for questioning.

Despite Testaverde's injury, Boston failed to dominate the game as they'd hoped. Both Randy Moss and Jamal Anderson put on lackluster performances, with only three catches and fifty yards rushing, respectively. Drew Bledsoe stepped up to bring home the win, passing for over 340 yards and a touchdown strike. The Boston defense also put up dominate numbers, but against a QB-less offense.

Proving Them Wrong
BEVERLY HILLS, CALIFORNIA--For three years, the Mennonites are picked to finish at or near the bottom of the league. It hasn't happened yet and if Mike Ditka has his way, it won't happen for a long time.

In a game similar to the BFL's first game which featured West Coast beating Sin City in a 162-138 shootout, the Mennonites posted the highest week one score of any team in the league, dominating the Woodchucks. Despite great showings from Randall Cunningham and Antonio Freeman as well as Duce Staley's hundred yard, two touchdown day, it wasn't enough to overcome the incomprehensible four TD (3 passing, one running) of Steve McNair and Curtis P. Enis's 120 all-purpose yards and touchdown.

"Enis is what got us," Coach Mick Foley groaned following the game. "I told everyone, 'We can let Enis get out. We need to cover that Enis before someone sees him.' Sometimes Enis has to come out to play, but there are times when it's not appropriate and being in the middle of a stadium full of 75,000 people is one of those times in my book."

Jermaine Lewis - Wombat franchise receiver fails to make even one catch in loss to Dissidents.

Rocket Makes High Pressure Catch
STADE ATLANTIS--The unpressurized dome of Stade Atlatis, 30 fathoms below the sea, is one of the most uncomfortable places to play football. The air is as thick as water, turning a 50 yard bomb into a shovelpass. That's what makes Raghib Ismail's 76 yard touchdown reception at the gun so amazing.

Down by four points with time for only one play remaining, Brett Favre heaved a Hail Mary into the waiting arms of Ismail, who had managed to get behind Wombat cornerback Donny Abraham. Favre broke down at a the press conference following the game. The bizarre show of emotions was attributed to madness brought on by intense pressure on his inner ear for an extended period of time. In his fit, he also began gnawing off his own thumb, but was halted by team doctors before he could do any permanent damage. The thumb will be examined Monday.

Rookie running back Ricky Williams was taken out of the game with an ankle injury after the first half, adding to the list of injured players.
