Hermo's Late Heroics Send Sin City to 2nd Bucco Bruce Bowl

BAKERSFIELD, VERMONT--Even as the game ended, owner Jake Bell chewed his fingernails nervously, worried Steve Young would manage to break out. As the final seconds counted down, Bell burst onto the field, embracing Herman Moore.

Moore, who'd been benched and openly criticized three weeks ago, caught a late touchdown to secure the game for Sin City. "At first I was upset at the benching, but it made me realize I really wasn't living up to my potential," Moore explained. Bell pulled the receiver aside during halftime and reminded him he was the franchise receiver. "He reminded me why I was on this team. Jake was telling me how last season I was the only 'must-have' player on his scouting report. I let a lot of people down this year, but I'm hoping a Bucco Bruce Trophy will make up for it."

A stunned Bakersfield crowd watched in disbelief as league MVP Steve Young posted human-like numbers. Even though Sin City held Young to a season low 29 points, Bell still

insisted biased scoring was affecting the outcome of the game. "Explain something to me. How can we intercept the ball seven times, but his stats show he only threw one? I'm telling you, it's a conspiracy!" Bell also declared his intention to log a protest of a touchdown pass caught by Rob Moore which replays showed clearly skipped off the turf and into the receiver's arms.

Young admitted to being tired following a gruelling scrimage against his teammates last week during the team's bye.

Lost in the excitment of the win was the terrible performance of Kerry Collins. In his second start for the Grifters, Collins threw 3 interceptions and lost a fumble. However, like last week when Mark Brunell was lost to injury in the first play of the game, the rest of the team compensated. "Kerry led us to a victory in his first start," Cortez Kennedy said. "He was a little nervous and that's to be expected. When we saw he wasn't going to get it done on his own, that jsut rallied the rest of us. Kennedy scored a touchdown on a fumble recovery as part of a 60 point defensive effort.

The Grifters return to the Bucco Bruce Bowl where they lost a close contest to the Iron City Blitzers last year. Six of the current Grifters were on last year's Bucco Bruce Bowl team, Terrell Davis, Mark Brunell, Herman Moore, Keenan McCardell, Ben Coates, and the Seahawk Defense. There is speculation, the Grifters may sign another member of that team, quarterback Jeff Blake, as a possible replacement for Kerry Collins.

Tonight's the Menno-night!

Green outplays Testaverde

BEVERLY HILLS, CALIFORNIA--They waited a full year for this moment. The similarities to last season were obvious and--at times--frightening.

Last season's Mennonites burst out to an insurmountable lead in the wins column, only to be hurt by late season injuries and wind up winning their division by one game with a record of 9-4, securing a bye in the first round. Hoping to heal up with a week off, the team instead turned stagnant and was upset by the third place team in the division.

Sunday, without Robert Smith, Chris Chandler, or Brad Johnson--all out with injuries--the 9-4 Mennonites, coming off a three game skid to end the season, faced the third place Neanderthal following their bye week. Sound familiar?

Cris Carter, one of the two Mennonites to play in both division championships, spoke with determination. "Jimmy [Smith] and

Trent Green
I looked at each other in the huddle and agreed, we weren't going to lose another one." Carter and quarterback Trent Green led the attack on the Neanderthal, hooking up for 11 catches, including a touchdown.

The Falcon defense managed to keep pressure on former Mennonite Vinnie Testaverde, last week's hero in the upset of the Texas Sexists. They also held Leroy Hoard to under 70 yards and kept him out of the end zone. Hoard had two touchdowns against the Sexists. In fact, they seemed so determined to stop the Testaverde/Keyshawn Johnson connection and Hoard, other players benefited. Terrance Mathis posted 35 points, including two 60+ yard touchdown grabs. Garrison Hearst took advantage of the defense's focus on Hoard to scamper for nearly 200 yards and a touchdown.

"The plan was to let those guys beat us," defensive coordinator Marky Mark Wahlberg said. "Everybody knows Hearst has been busting out all over, but he can't carry a tea,. Freeman, Mathis, both great, but you can put up all the numbers in the world and if your team doesn't back you up, you're not going anywhere. Just ask Favre." Wahlberg then revealed the reason he'd taken the job in the first place was to reasearch for his role in the upcoming film biography of Vince Lombardi. Wahlberg will play the late Packers' coach and will portray him with deep respect. "That and I'll have him breakdance a lot," Wahlberg revealed.

The Mennonites will go on to face the Grifters in the Bucco Bruce Bowl. The all-time series stands even at two games apiece, though Sin City has won two straight. Fans will look forward to another game like the first in BFL history in which the teams set a precedent with the highest scoring game in BFL history.
